A Complete Guide to Styling a Coastal Dining Table: Using Everyday Home Décor

Every table scape needs a starting point. Sometimes it's a tablecloth. Sometimes it's a colour. For us, it was three rocks.

Not a perfectly polished one, but the kind you find along the shoreline - sun-bleached, weathered by waves, rough to touch yet beautiful because of its imperfections.

That one thought led us somewhere unexpected...

What if a dining table could capture everything we love about the coast? The muted blues of the sea. White shells scattered across the sand. Driftwood washed ashore. Dried grasses dancing in the breeze. Warm wood, textured stone and ceramics that feel handmade.

The Whispers of the Sea Table Cover became our canvas, its blue-and-white print reminding us of gentle waves meeting the shore. Down the centre, we layered the Woven Aegean Blue Reversible Runner, bringing in the deeper blues of the sea.

The best part? Almost everything else came from simply looking around the house.

Every home already has beautiful objects waiting to be styled differently.

• A teapot can become a flower vase.
• A ceramic mug can hold dried blooms.
• A wooden bowl can become the centrepiece.
• A serving tray can suddenly become a platform to create height.

Instead of asking, "What should I buy?", ask yourself, "What can this become?"

That's exactly how this table scape came together. The styling wasn't built around expensive décor pieces - it was built around everyday objects that found a new purpose. 

Start With Your Base

Let the Tablecloth Tell the Story

For a coastal table scape, the foundation matters.

The Whispers of the Sea Table Cover already carries the feeling of the ocean through its intricate blue motifs against a crisp white background. It reminds us of hand-painted coastal tiles, sea foam washing onto the shore, and quiet mornings by the water.

Instead of overpowering it, we layered the Woven Aegean Blue Reversible Runner through the centre. Its woven texture adds depth without taking attention away from the print, much like the darker blues of the sea sitting against pale sand. Once the base is right, everything else simply becomes a supporting character. 

Build Height Without Fancy Props 

Everyday Containers Make the Best Styling Pieces

One of the biggest secrets to creating an interesting table is varying the height.

For our centrepiece, we used weighted containers filled with channa (chickpeas) before placing serving plates on top. The weight keeps everything sturdy while also giving the stand enough stability to hold heavier décor pieces.

It's a simple trick that costs almost nothing but makes styling much easier. 

Around them, we layered:

• Wooden serving plates
• Ceramic bowls
• Coconut cups
• Small wooden bowls

Use What Nature Already Gives You

Fresh white bougainvillea flowers instantly soften the table and bring in that breezy coastal feeling. Instead of arranging them perfectly, we let them fall naturally around the centrepiece. The slightly undone look feels much closer to nature.

To keep the flowers fresh throughout your gathering, always soak your floral foam in water before arranging the stems. It keeps the blooms hydrated for hours and makes styling much easier.

We tucked small bougainvillea petals in between the setting to fill the empty spaces rather than leaving visible gaps. This arrangement feels fuller, softer and far more organic.

Texture Is What Makes a Coastal Table Feel Real 

Think Beyond Shells 

Coastal styling isn't about filling your table with seashells. It's about recreating the feeling of the shoreline. That's why we introduced layers of texture throughout the setup.

Our pampas grass arrangement was anchored with walnuts inside the vase. They aren't immediately visible, but their rich texture subtly adds warmth while helping support the stems.

Across the runner, we scattered:

• Natural stones
• Coral-inspired textured pieces
• Pinecones
• Flower petals
• Walnuts
• Coconut cups filled with pebbles and dried gypsy flowers

Each little detail feels as though it could have been collected during a long walk by the sea.

Style Beyond the Centrepiece

The most memorable tables are the ones that invite people to keep looking.

On either side of the table, we placed two wicker baskets lined with deep our woven aegean blue napkins. These are perfect for serving crackers, bread, dry snacks or small bites while adding another natural texture to the setup.

• A coconut candle adds warmth once evening arrives.
• Wooden serving plates bring in earthy contrast.
• Ceramics soften the palette.
• Scattered petals stop the table from feeling too structured. 

These tiny details may seem small individually, but together they create a table that feels thoughtfully lived in.

A beautiful coastal table isn't about buying matching décor. It's about noticing textures, the grain of wood, the roughness of stone, the softness of dried grasses, the quiet beauty of white flowers.
