Step 2: How much should a tablecloth hang over the edge?

The "drop" is the fabric that hangs over the edge of your table.

For everyday dining, we recommend a 6–8 inch (15–20 cm) drop on all sides. This offers enough coverage while remaining comfortable for guests to sit around the table.

A shorter drop creates a more casual look, while a longer drop works beautifully for Buffet meals, grazing tables and celebrations - where the table is draped, but guests are not seated around the table.

For Square Tables, measure one side of the table and add 12–16 inches (30–40 cm).

For Rectangular and Oval tables measure the length and Width. Then add 12–16 inches (30–40 cm) to both measurements to achieve a 6–8 inch (15–20 cm) drop on each side.

Yes, you can use a rectangular tablecloth on an oval dining table. However, because the shapes don't match, the fabric will not drape evenly. The tablecloth will hang longer at the curved ends and shorter along the sides, creating a more pointed drop at each end.

For the most balanced and tailored look, we recommend choosing an oval tablecloth for an oval table. That said, table styling is a matter of personal preference. If you enjoy the softer, flowing look of a rectangular tablecloth on an oval table, there's no right or wrong choice—the best tablecloth is the one that suits your style and your home.

For Round tables, measure the diameter of your table and add 12–16 inches (30–40 cm) for the ideal overhang.

Don't rely on seating capacity alone when choosing a tablecloth. While dining tables are often described as 4-seater, 6-seater or 8-seater, the actual dimensions can vary significantly between manufacturers. The most accurate way to choose a tablecloth is to measure your table's dimensions.

For example, not all 6-seater dining tables are the same size. A compact 6-seater rectangular table may fit our 48 × 72 inch (122 × 183 cm) tablecloth, a regular 6-seater rectangular table may fit our 60 × 90 inch (152 × 229 cm) tablecloth perfectly, while a larger or wider 6-seater may look better with a 60 × 100 inch (152 × 254 cm) or even a 60 × 116 inch (152 × 295 cm) tablecloth. If your table falls between sizes, we generally recommend choosing the larger tablecloth for a more elegant drape.

If your table falls between two sizes, we recommend choosing the larger tablecloth. A slightly longer drape almost always looks more elegant than one that's too short. It also allows room for alteration, if you choose to.

If you use an extension table, always measure it in its fully extended position if you plan to entertain with the leaves in place. You may want to consider having multiple sets of table covers.
